Dr. Naito challenged his passion and endeavor for exploration of deep sea foraging by marine mammals over the last 30 years by developing miniaturized animal-borne instruments. Remarkable advantages have been achieved in measuring the diving behavior of marine mammals along a fine scale by using animal-borne digital instruments (Bio-logging instruments). Observations of the foraging behavior over long durations by aquatic mammals remains Dr. Naito’s primary focus and interest. Specifically he is interested in “when, where, what, how and how much do marine mammals forage?” as his guiding questions in the pursuit of data and new methods to understand how these animals survive and thrive in the open oceans.

Aquatic Mammals is the oldest peer-reviewed journal publishing papers on marine mammal science. To celebrate 35 years of publication, the Editors and Editorial Board of Aquatic Mammals launched the Historical Perspectives series to document marine mammal history through a series of interviews with key researchers.
